That’s about how long it takes the average person to pay off their student loan debt.
That’s about how many workers live paycheck to paycheck and say they are in debt, according to a survey by Harris Poll.
That’s the estimated average student loan debt as of 2019, according to the Federal Reserve.
All of these statistics could be you, but none of them HAVE to be you. I’m here to help you get out of debt, stay out of debt, and build wealth.
Gen Z Green is a personal finance podcast for young people invested in themselves. I’ll help you avoid the common mistakes that keep even the most educated people (i.e. those with JDs and PhDs) from building wealth. If you’ve already made a few mistakes, I’ll help you fix them so you can start building wealth. If you’ve never made a serious paycheck in your life, I’ll help you get started. If you’re already a personal finance pro, I’ll expose you to new perspectives and ideas.
Did you know that the median household income of non-hispanic whites is 170% of that of African Americans, according to the Economic Policy Institute4? That’s an insanely large disparity and another driving factor for the creation of Gen Z Green. America has a history of toxic relationships with race and socioeconomics. It started with slavery, extended to de jure (forced/legal) segregation, and today manifests itself as de facto (societal/systemic) segregation and implicit bias. Think implicit bias isn’t real? Ask yourself this: if you had the choice of being born Black or White, which would you choose?
As a young Black man, I am taking responsibility and taking these issues head on. We must empower other young people of color to do more with what they have and, more importantly, to MAKE more from what they have.
Speaking of toxic relationships, we also know that the United States, as a country, has a seriously toxic relationship with debt. The national deficit is absurdly high and only climbing higher at $26 trillion, as of this writing5. That’s staggering. Its more than five times GDP and its likely that by 2021 we will be rearing up on $30 trillion. Don’t get me started on credit card debt, bad mortgage debt, and personal loan debt. America has a major debt problem, and its going to take every last one of us to fix it.
You’re probably wondering, “Okay, but how is Gen Z Green going to fix this?” The answer is simple. One step at a time. One day at a time.
